Llanberis, at the gateway to Snowdonia, is one of the most picturesque towns in Wales. A popular destination for walkers and tourists alike, Llanberis has gorgeous scenery, great local food and drink and is a safe destination, particularly for those with young children.
One of the oldest towns in Wales, Llanberis is small, but bustling, particularly in the spring and summer months. It has a fascinating and long history.
Llanberis is dominated by two sights, the first is Mount Snowdon. At over 3,500 feet in height, Snowdon (known as “Wyddfa” locally) is the largest mountain in England and Wales. Llanberis is popular with walkers and visitors, as it is scalable by those people of an average fitness from the town (we do recommend reading our Snowdon Safety Guide first before setting off). To find out the mountain as a whole, read our Walking guide to Snowdon.
The second dominating feature of Llanberis is Llyn Padarn, a large glacial lake formed during the last ice age. At over 2 miles wide & 94 feet deep, it’s one of the most impressive features in North Wales. Llanberis is the home of the Llanberis Lake Railway, which is a narrow gauge heritage railway that runs from Llanberis to Pen Llyn. This railway is popular with tourists. As well as the Llanberis Lake Railway there’s a lot more to see in Llanberis for tourists. For more details, please read our article about Top 5 Things To Do In Llanberis.
